This article is about a spacecraft known as "Dawn" that was launched a few days ago to explore the unexplored asteroid belt. Dawn will be photgraphing these comsic objects and recording the minerals and elements on the surface of both the asteroid Vesta and the minor planet Ceres, which is the biggest object in the asteroid belt. By taking photographs and learning about the composition of these cosmic travelers we humans may be able to get a better glimpse as to what happend during the earliest days of time, or the younger years of the solar system.

What I did to understand this article was to re-read it and actually look-up the material that I did not understand. So if I did not know what the asteroid belt was I would just search it up and find a site that could help me understand what it is.

This article talks about President Bush and his veto on the bipartisan bll that would've expanded childrens health insurance. Becuase of this the republican party feared that his choice in employing this veto would have high risks for next years election for the republican party.
The Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, states, "By vetoing a biartisan bill to renew the successful Children's Health Insurance program, president Bush is denying health care to millions of low-income kids in america."
Bush retaliates by saying. "Poor kids first. Secondly, i believe in private medicine, not the federal government running the care system."
Bush also argues that the democratic bill was to expensive and since there were so many other organizations that dealt with children health, the money being used to renew the Childrens health insurance could be spent on other things that could be for the well being of the country.

Reading Strategies:
-highlight important or main points
-re-read article to make sure i actually understood the text.

In Carletonville, South Africa 3000 mine workers were trapped in a gold mine because of a broken water pipe that damaged the elevator and blocked all exits from the mine tunnel. They have been trapped down there since Tuesday night, and they are still in the process of being rescued. The average gold mine tunnels in South Africa is "1 1/2 miles below the service." The miners are thirsty and hungry, and there is a possibility that they may run out of oxygen from the blockage of the tunnel by the collapsed mine. None of the workers are injured, but the rescue plan is still being determined.

This article is about China's gender imbalance due to the One-Child Policy. Since families are only allowed one child, couples prefer boys so girls are either aborted or not reported. In a kindergarten classroom in Huizhou, there are 39 boys and 8 girls. This has had an effect in classrooms. Girls are copying boys and becoming more aggressive.

I would have to do some background research if I did not know what the One-Child Policy was.

This article is about a new registration systen in city pools. To sign up for swimming classes all you had to do was show up and pay $2. Now you have show a California ID and a utilities bill to prove that you are a resident. This leaves undocumented families to enroll their kids in program doesn't allow them to use their commuiyt resources. This system was installed to make it easier for people to enroll in recreational centers programs because they could then do it on line. In this case it also leaves certain kids and families un elegeble to participate in those activities.

I read out loud and discused it with a peer.

3. The article called “Jury Retraces Diana’s Fatal Path” is an article on the night Princess Diana died. She died after leaving the Ritz Hotel and entered a Mercedes with a driver, security guard, herself, and her “boyfriend” Dodi Fayed. Dodi Fayed was a son of a Muslim Egyptian father who was a billionaire. The article mentions that the death of Princess Diana could have been plotted out by Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II because they did not want a Muslim in the royal circle. The driver of the car had three times the amount of alcohol from the legal limit. That could be another reason why they crashed into a pillar down the tunnel in Paris.
4. A strategy I had to use to understand the article was to read some parts of the text more than once. Also I had to look up were some parts of the world are that they mentioned.

this article is basically about angry neighbors [people who live near ugly wind turbines. this might make the electricity cheaper for the himself but not his neighbors. yet these people are angry because there beautiful houses that are historical to the area are now surrounded by tall wind turbine's. which might make the prices of the houses value decrease. The resident who is putting this up just wants to make his house more environmentally friendly and keep his electricity bill down. he says they shouldest care what he does with his money. but these people should have a say to a 45 foot tall pole that they can see form a mile.

what i did to understand this article was just read it and think to myself why the neighbors where making such a big deal about it.

This article talks about how local S.F. restaurants are signing up for a program called grease to fuel plan. The plan was suggested because of the waste problem in sewers. The fats and oils in the sewers can became a thick layer of liquids in the pipes. The grease will be turned in to bio-diesel fuel, making very good use of the fuel instead of dumping it in the sewers. The biggest goal that they have for this plan is to have enough fuel to generate 20% of power for the city.

(Yes, it might be a little stereotypical of me, but it's about Armenian Genocide - but it's really important, that's why I am posting it)

A week ago, Turkish president told USA that if they will pass Armenian Genocide recognition than their relations with America will collapse. Today the congress "OKs Armenian measure" but George Bush haven't accepted it. He said that it's a wrong call and he doesn't want to mess up the relations with Turkey.
Basically he is a hypocrite because he says "yea they killed them, but I need them in war with Iraq even though they themselves are killing Kurds right now in Iraq"

At first, when I read the title and some introduction paragraphs, I though the genocide was actually finally recognized by USA. But then I watched the video where Bush said he is not going to accept that resolution. Important lesson - don't judge the book by its cover, meaning read the whole article/videos before calling your Armenian relatives with false news.

3. I witnessed this first hand being that this was taking place in front of my mom office complex. So I decided to read up on in. In the financial district 14 building had been struck with a strike by their security staff. The staff was seeking new wages and better health care. It is reported that Security staff makes $24,000 a year which means they are paid $5 less that a janitor. The main complex affected by the strike was One Front Street which is owned by a firm named Jones Lang La Salle.

4.I read this article and talked to my mom because it was happening in her building. So I thought I could get a different perspective.

The article reports about a shooting in a school in Ohio. A student who was suspended shot today several people in his school. He could bring the arms inside the school although there were metal detectors at the doors. It seams to be that the detectors weren’t used the whole time and so the 14 year old student could take the arms inside the school. In the end the suspended student killed him-self. For tomorrow all classes in the school district are canceled.

I had to read some parts of the text several times to understand it and I had to look a few words up.

This article talks about a man who attempted to get change for a 1 million dollar bill at a grocery store. When the cashier both refused to give the man change as well as return the bill the man got angry. He slammed a credit card reader against the counter and was escourted out by police. No one knows who the guy is because he didn't have idea and isn't talking. The bill was obviously a fake because the largest bills in circulation right now are $100s and there have never been bills in circulation that were worth more than $1000.

This article is about the situation about this coming up Halloween over in the Castro. Even though it was said before in the newspaper people don't see why the Castro has to be closed during Halloween because it is a tradtional event to have at the Castro. Even though the people are asked not to come to the Castro during Halloween the cops well be there just in case anyone does show up. There will be no action or events at all because the police are increase 20% more cops then before. People will be put into jail if breaking the law and there will also be DUI checkpoints in the area. Though they don't know if there well be one next year because it's to far from now.

What I did to understand this article was to re-read the article. Also to take previous knowledge of what happend in the past and think how this well affect our society now.

CURRENT EVENT ARTICLE #1

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071011/ap_on_re_us/school_shooting;_ylt=ArtQXZPpE0xDSvC8x_tP5.MDW7oF

The article I chose is about a student in Cleveland, Ohio who opened fire on classmates and teachers after making threats prior to the incident. Other students who heard the threats tried to warn the principal about it, but the problem was never attended to because the principal was too busy. The student who opened fire was known to have mental problems; and he was also known for making threats of suicide. The shooting took place after the shooter was punched in the face by another student. After that he shot the student who punched him in the face, as well as another student and two teachers. He then proceeded to kill himself.

One strategy I used to help me understand this article was re-reading the article. Another strategy I used was to look up words that I was unfamilar with.

I watched this 60 minutes expose on Sunday. To me, it was quite a familiar topic, given we had studied such DNA research in science class 2 years ago.

It was amazing to hear how many ancestors an individual has, and how many possible relatives one could find in the world. My family has always had an interest in geneology, so it's funny to know that all the work my family has done to find relatives and ancestors is only hitting the tip of the iceberg, overall.

This article is about one of the worst cases of student loan debt. This interested me because it has to do with a culinary institute; my life long friend is a culinary institute student. The article explains just how expensive it can be going to a private institute, especially when you take loans out. It explains how this student foolishly signed contracts without reading the fine print; facing thousands upon thousands of dollars of debt with huge interest rate.

I didn’t have any trouble reading this article, but I read it twice, skimming once and looking for important details the second time.

It is a controversy because it is considered to violate the French constitution and the human rights of privacy. It is widely disliked by people from all parts of the country and all parts of the government, and one official has even threatened to resign if this were to continue.

The political corruption in china is at a new high. It is said the the cost of this corruption has reached a level higher than the education budget. It has been estimated that 10% of China's national budget is spent on bribes or is just plain stolen by officials. If this continues, it could be the downfall of the Chinese government. In June there were about 1,800 officials who confessed to corruption and just recently in July, former food official Zheng Xiaoyu was executed for corruption.

After a 14 year-old freshman, was suspended on Monday for a fight, he shot and injured two students and two teachers before killing himself.
The shooting happened around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, at a high school called SuccessTech Academy located in Cleveland, Ohio. This High school, like C.A.T., was started by money from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The shooter was described by the students, as “Gothic” in style, 5' foot 5, and chubby. The shooter was said to be often mocked for the way he dressed and for how he bragged about plans to target his tormentors. The shooter also had a history of violence; he had been in a juvenile detention center for domestic violence, attempted to commit suicide at a mental health facility, and had problems with his relationship with his mother.

To help me understand and summarize this article, I printed out it out and talked to the text, mostly highlighting important facts.

This Article is about the San Francisco Forty-Niners and their future in Santa Clara. The article talks about how the Forty-Niners were planning on going and using the Great America Theme Park parking lot as the site for their dream stadium but the owner of the theme park opposes the plan. The plan to move the Niners will cost 853 million dollars and the annual revenue of the Great America Theme Park is only 5.3 million dollars. Another reason the owner opposes the move is that he believes the stadium site will cause loss of parking and will bring unruly football fans to Great America. Therefore with all those negatives he has come to the conclusion that the if the stadium is moved there the future of Great America will be in jeopardy.

This article is about a new school shooting which took place in Ohio. The shooter Asa Coon killed himself after injuring two teachers and two other students at Success Tech Academy. Apparently this all happened because he was troubled and very violent he let of many warning signs which should not have been missed, like verbal threats saying that he was going to shoot everyone up at the school. Coon also previously was admitted to several mental hospitals were they said he probably was bipolar. But then later he was put under house detention and enrolled into Success Tech Academy. Many parents complained because they were pushing to get metal detectors and that they wanted it for two to three years but there wants were not heard.

This was actually pretty easy to understand and was written in a clera way that anyone would understand it. But even so there were somewords i did not know and hod to look up like bipolar. And on top of that i had to read over all of the names of the people over again.

This article is about the removal of cat’s claws. The Supreme Court allows the banning of cat declawing in the cities of California. The Board of Supervisors in San Francisco condemned the act of claw removal, but it’s still legal. Even though it is legal in San Francisco to declaw a cat, animal shelters in San Francisco will refuse to let an owner have a cat if they wanted to declaw the cat. But if the cat buyer wanted a cat without claws then they would give them a cat that has already had its claws removed. West Hollywood was the first to start the banning and in West Hollywood it is a crime to remove cat’s claws. There was also a conflict between the state, city and veterinarians dealing with this case. The California Medical Veterinary opposes the fact that there should be a statewide ban because they think that the state and city should stay out of it.

Re-reading the article and looking up words.

“Judge blocks effort to use no-match letters to fire illegal workers”

This article is about how a federal judge in san Francisco stopped a bill that would require businesses to fire their employee’s who’s SSN didn’t match those in the country’s database because they concluded that if it didn’t match than they were illegal immigrants. Many people are opposed to this because there are many reasons why many peoples SSN would not match those in the database. This could be because an employer doesn’t take the SSN down properly, because of the name change many people have especially when they get married or divorced, or because their names weren’t spelled properly because they are foreign among many other things. If an employee’s SSN didn’t match they would have to submit a new one within 90 days and if they didn’t their employer would be forced to fire them. Many people also fear that this would keep employers from hiring legal residents because they have foreign names which would lead thousands of legal residents from being employed.

The reading strategies I used were to re-read parts I didn’t understand and to read the parts out loud if I still didn’t get what was being said.

“Child actor's rape scene in 'Kite Runner' splits Bay Area Afghans”

This article talks about the controversy surrounding the rape scene in the movie, “The Kite Runner.” The article says that the release of the movie was delayed because this scene can put the young actors who live in Afghanistan in danger. Some people argue that the scene should stay in the movie because the movie should directly depict the story as it was written by the author and others say it should be taken out all together. The reason these boys may be in danger is because their religion “looks down” on issues like this even though they happen a lot, their community doesn’t talk about it nor do they present it to others, they just let it happen. Basically, they don’t spotlight these issues. Those against it say the scene should be taken out because, “it is just a book” and they prefer to keep the children safe and say that the scene only degrades the children. And those who want the scene to stay in the movie say that these people need to face the reality of what has and what still happens to these kids and that it is an essential part of the storyline. A proposed resolution was to relocate the actors and their families, but they can’t be relocated to the U.S. because Afghans aren’t eligible for refugee status.

The reading strategies I used were to re-read the parts I didn’t understand out loud and to highlight the main/key points.

This article is about what occured on the morning of Thursday October 11th on the freeway in hayward. Early in the morning (dawn) there had been people calling about a dead animal being on the road and they wanted it to get cleared up. But, once an officer arrived at the sense after the sun had risen, they discovered that it was not an animal and instead a person. This caused traffic to back up for hours but the worst part about it all was that the persons body parts scattered along a long part of the highway. They don't know if this was a homicide yet, but they don't believe that this was a homeless person because of the clothing that was found, and the male had money in his pocket.
They have not yet identified the victim, but they believe that its either a hispanic or african american male in his 50s.

I think that this article was pretty stright forward, but I did watch the news a lot for more updates to see if anything had changed and if they had more information on what happened.

Through his lectures and such Gore was praised as “the single individual that has done the most…” about spreading worldwide understanding and warning of the climate change. Gore says he will donate half of the prize money to Alliance for Climate Protection. British judge criticized Gore’s movie saying there were nine errors and Gore is an alarmist. This article was an easy read, so I guess I skimmed it at first just to get a basic idea, then I read it more carefully. It worked out for me.

A woman from New York is angry with Apple because of the $200 off the price of the iPhone and filed a lawsuit asking for $1 million in damages. The woman claimed that the company violated the price discrimination laws when the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399. Apple reduced the price and stopped selling the $499 4GB. Many customers complained about the price reduction because they never thought that the price of the iPhone would reduce so soon. Apple had refunded $200 difference for the people who bought the iPhone within the 14 days of the reduction.

I didn’t really need to have any reading strategies because the text was easy. But I did read it more than once.

Two European physicists, France's Albert Fert and German Peter Gruenberg won the 2007 Nobel Prize in physics. They were awarded this for their breakthrough in finding a magnetic phenomenon back in 1988. With that finding, others were able to make hard drives/disks that we use and see almost everyday. For example, with this finding, products such as iPods, laptops and memory sticks are no possible and very real. Also with this finding, we are able to make smaller hard drives over time that can now hold way more gigabytes, and now terrabytes, into a single place.

It's hard to say that I used a reading strategy to read this other than reading the whole piece slowly because, me being a nerd/geek, I understand most of what is being talked about. Same kinda goes for Taylor too probably.

The article was about a well known rapper named T.I. being charged with
weapon charges. the articles spoke of how the rapper pleaded not guilty.
he pleaded this when his bodyguard was found with the weapons. after he purchased them on T.I's behalf. this was ironic that on the same night T.I. was nominated for 9 awards. this was not the first time T.I. was convicted. he had run ins with the law in the past.

Connected it to personal experience seeing that i am a fan of T.I. myself

i also had to re-read the article even though it was short
i had to get a full grasp

The article I chose is about two burned bodies that were found in San Diego. They are thought to have been burned in the wildfires that have been occurring in Southern California. It was said that discovery crews found the bodies in a home north of San Diego. Medical examiners are still working on finding the identity of the two burned bodies. There has also been five other deaths connected to the Southern California wildfires.

One strategy I used to understand the article was re-reading it until it was clear to me what the main idea of the article was. Another strategy was highlighting the main points which helped me to be able to understand the rest of the article.

Divisions deep over abortion ban

There is a new law in Nicaragua that makes abortion illegal, no matter if it is threatening to your health or if you were raped. It includes a story about an 18 year old pregnant girl went to the doctor because she was having pregnancy pains. She had an ultrasound to see if the baby was still alive and the doctor sent her on her way. The doctor did not tell her that her life was at stake and that she needed a surgical intervention, and later on she had a hemorrhage and died. Since the law was passed there has been about 82 pregnancy related deaths. As the law is still in effect there will be nothing more than growing and growing controversy.

The article was not that hard to read/understand so I did not have too many problems. I did read it twice though just to make sure that I had all the facts.
