*Former governer Mike Huchabee expresses his view point about the AIDS epademic. He states that the process of isolating patients with infectious diseases used in the past should be applied to AIDS carriers so they are not connected with the general public. Huckabee feels homosexuality is abnormal, bizarre and evil, and it presents a dangerous threat to public health. Huckabee also expresses that AIDS research already recieves much more federal money than the research for cancer, diadetes, and heat disease and that it wouldn't be right for them to continue to give more money to AIDS research. He poses a suggestion that celebity millionaires who are advocating for more AIDS research to give money out of the own pockets.

*The reading strategies that I used to better understand this article was to reread it, and to look up the words that were unfamiliar to me.

Germany is willing to ban the Church of Scientology. The ministers want to know if the Church's legal status as an association could be challenged.
They said that Scientology might be a threat to the democratic order.
The BBC reporter Tristana Moore says that the members of Scientology have a right to freedom of religion. By the way Scientology was founded in the U.S. in the 1950's by a science-fiction author, named L Ron Hubbard.

I used rereading the text because it took me a while to understand the article.

There was a huge oil spill at Taean in South Korea's southwest coast. It will take them a while, about two months to finish cleaning it. This oil spill is the biggest one in the history of South Korea, and it caused many damages already. It caused beaches to become black with a bad odor as well as birds to be covered in tar. The fish in the sea will not be able to be sold until after a while. The spill affected the Yellow Sea as it spreads, causing a lot of pollution.

I had to read more than once as well as highlight some points that were important so I would remember them and relate it to the rest of the article.

Basically this article is about a letter President Bush has sent to North Korea urging Kim Jong-il to show its nuclear weapons and to give details of its nuclear abilities. The importance of the letter is to get North Korea to disable or expose its nuclear capabilities and remind Kim Jong-il about the “aid-for-disarmament deal.” The controversy of this letter is that it can lead to the happy bright side of the forest with bright green trees or to the sullen, dark side with dead trees for the U.S. and North Korean relations.

What I did to read this article was to re-read it over several times to understand what is going on. I also thought about how this can be controversial, yet at this point I think that almost anything that has to do with North Korea and the U.S. is controversial considering there is a lot of awkwardness between the two countries.

- The article is talking about how NASA is going to delay the launch of Atlantis untill 2008 because there is a problem with a sensor on the fuel tank. Because of this problem serious failure could happen to the ship and may even cause it to explode or cause a fire. Yet it is good that they found this before it actually launched into space and will give them more data points to help in the future.

- The reading stratagies I used for this article is looked up information on this launch to see the history of it. I then also looked up words I didnt know about the different parts.

"Oprah Endorses Obama"

In Chicago, there is no question who carries the title of the Big O. That would be Oprah Winfrey. It’s a safe bet that Senator Barack Obama doesn’t mind playing second fiddle to the talk show icon, particularly when he has her endorsement at his disposal.

Ms. Winfrey, who for years has been a close friend to Mr. Obama, reaffirmed her support for his presidential candidacy during an interview Tuesday evening on CNN’s Larry King Live. It is the first time that Ms. Winfrey has endorsed – not to mention thrown her brand behind – a political candidate.

“What made you do so now?” Mr. King asked.

“Because I know him personally,” Ms. Winfrey replied. “I think that what he stands for, what he has proven that he can stand for, what he has shown was worth me going out on a limb for – and I haven’t done it in the past because I haven’t felt that anybody, I didn’t know anybody well enough to be able to say, I believe in this person.”

“Is there a side of you, the woman side, that would lead toward a Hillary?” Mr. King inquired.

“Well,” Ms. Winfrey said, “I have great respect for Hillary Clinton. I think I’ve said this before and it’s true: Because I am for Barack does not mean I am against Hillary or anybody else.

“So the fact that I would endorse Barack Obama and the fact that I would support Barack Obama,” Ms. Winfrey added, “I have not one negative thing to say about Hillary Clinton.”

She said she has not written a check to Mr. Obama’s campaign.

“Well the truth of the matter is, whether I contribute or not contribute, you are limited to how much you contribute, so my money isn’t going to make any difference to him,” Ms. Winfrey said. “I think that my value to him, my support of him, is probably worth more than any check.”

And that, of course, raises the ultimate question: What exactly will Ms. Winfrey do for the campaign? Even Mr. Obama’s aides don’t have an answer and are far from certain how they will use – or attempt to use – this endorsement.

But is it such a bad problem to have?

I didn't find any difficulties with this reading at all.

In the article “Coming in From the Cold: CIA Spy Calls Waterboarding Necessary But Torture” a retired CIA agent John Kiriakou speaks about waterboarding in American prisons. He says that the CIA and FBI used waterboarding in a few cases to get information out of terrorists to prevent terrorist attacks. After 9/11 he thought that this is necessary to make sure that there won’t be more attacks like against the World Trade Center. But now his mind changed and he isn’t sure any more if waterboarding is right because he thinks that waterboarding is torture. "Like a lot of Americans, I'm involved in this internal, intellectual battle with myself weighing the idea that waterboarding may be torture versus the quality of information that we often get after using the waterboarding technique," Kiriakou told ABC News. "And I struggle with it" (Richard Esposito & Brian Ross, December 10, 2007). He thinks that the nation should debate about the theme and should decide if waterboarding should be allowed or not.

I had to read a few parts several times and I had to look up some words.

The article talks about a hate crime law not being passed. The bill was from 1998 where Matthew Shepard was beaten to death because of hate crimes. It has gotten a lot of attention but President Bush suggested that he will veto the bill. And he won’t have any trouble doing that. But they are trying to find a way to attach it to a department of defense authorization bill which Bush will have a harder time vetoing.

- The article I found is also an online diary blog of two rangers trying to protect gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park. It is especially difficult for them because of the fighting between the government armies “and rebels of dissident General Laurent Nkunda.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7110093.stm. This fight has escalated into something more complicated due to both sides recruiting additional groups to fight (government-supported groups to fight against rebels, etc). The fighting has driven villagers out and into unequipped refugee camps, where necessities are unavailable. Because there is no food, shelter or fuel wood, villagers are forced to use the forest as fuel. Consequently, this camp is next to the Gorilla Sector so the villagers are actually setting fire to the highly endangered mountain gorillas’ habitats (there are only 72 in this sector).

- I had to do some additional research to understand why this fight was occurring and whom it was between. Overall, it wasn’t too difficult to read because it was diary entries.

This article is about a new collection of drugs taken by meth/cocaine addicts as well as alcoholics, and in about 57% of cases the addicts simply don't care for their drug of choice any longer. The article originally presented it as if it were a new sent-from-God sort of a cocktail, although they soon presented the fallacies. Apparently, addicts put into basic drug addiction therapy reveal the same sort of results as those who took the cocktails, although it took more time for them to pull away from the drug use. It is not FDA approved, and according to science, doesn't have much of a/any affect on the parts of the brain that are affected by and control addiction in an individual.

Honestly, my reading strategy was reading the interviewee's names during the interview because that's all the reading I had to do, given this exposé was thanks to 60 minutes.

***TO YVETTE***
This same episode also had an exposé about issues in the Congo, with the 'charcoal mafia', social issues in the Congo, and organized executions of gorillas in their rainforests as an act of protest by the charcoal mafia against the enviromentalists of Congo.

3) Robert "Willie" Pickton, who was formally a pig farmer in Canada is now on trial for the murders of 26 women. He butchered these women in the slaughterhouse of his pig farm, one girl's hands and feet were found in a bucket on his farm, and some other parts of girls were found in pigpens. He is being sentenced to life in prison and 25 years before he can get parole. Most of the women that he killed were prostitutes and drug addicts that he lured on to his farm and killed. He is still facing charges for 20 other murders. Canada does not have the death penalty so the worst this man can get is life in prison. They are saying that Pickton is possibly the worst serial killer Canada has ever seen.

Verizon Wireless has been given the o.k. to build a cellular communications tower disguised as a tree in San Rafael. The 60 foot tower was opposed by a group of residents from different areas of Marin County around where the tower will be built. The residents said that it would be like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, looking disarmingly pretty while spewing dangerous electromagnetic radiation. In spite of the protest of residents the commissioners voted 4-2 in favor of the tower and unless the residents appeal the decision it will be built among the trees of Marin.

It describes the drop in popularity of marijuana but also the steady percentage of narcotic usage as Vicodin and OxyContin. The statistics show that in 10 years, the percentage of drug usage by teenagers/high school students has dropped by 10%. I found this article for the fishbowl discussion in class.

The news article, “First Palestinian Policewomen begin work” talks about how the first policewomen started working today in RAMALLAH, West Bank. These new police officers had just completed a training program sponsored by the European-Union in an effort to help inadequately equipped law enforcement agencies. The new policewomen’s job is to direct and conduct traffic, to conduct house searches and to search women in universities and prisons in routine security checks. People had mixed feelings regarding this issue, many male officers weren’t very happy about it, and many women were happy to see this. The women though, “It is wonderful watching Palestinian women enforce law and order..” The women wore navy blue jeans, light blue shirts, and navy blue headscarves for regards to Muslims. An interesting part of this article is that there are 500 policewomen employed and 18,000 policemen and most of the women have clerical duties which means they mostly do office work.

I article was pretty simple to understand, but I did encounter a few unknown words which is the only reading strategy I used. The words I learned were clerical and donned which means to put on/ dress in/ or to take on.

Last night, a woman died in a house fire basically because firemen dont have gps systems on their trucks (apparently) and they dont google search for directions before they leave. So around 3am near Monterey Blvd an old man called in to report that he smelled smoke. But after the firefighters spent 25 minutes driving though the neighborhood looking for the fire, they got lost and werent able to find the house in time. I think this just goes to show you what funding cut backs have caused. Because of budget cuts, the city cant afford heat sensored helicopters, which would have easily found her house. It took nearly 3 hours for the firetrucks to find the house almost burnt down to the ground.

The article wasnt a difficult read.

A couple of young parents beat their child to death(3 years old). They were disciplining her, but apparently it got out of hand. So they hid her in a shed, and then dumped out in the bay. Then the body washed up on shore where it was discovered by a fisherman. The sentencing if convicted will be life without parole.

The reading strategy I used was to picture this from the point of view of the parents. This helped me better understand what they did, and what they did following the murder or manslaughter.

This article is about how evolution is instead making groups of people look more different from one another than alike, which has always thought to have been the case. Researchers think that because population has been increasing at such a rapid rate, there has been a higher need to adapt to environments than needed with less people in the world. I found this article quite interesting as I once saw an interesting picture in Time Magazine (or was it National Geographic?) where they had a photshopped image of how they believed people would look in the future if all races merged together. The rest of the article brings up issues of why certain groups have certain traits/characteristics, mostly based on their need to adapt and human migration.

The article was fairly straightforward, and I didn't need to do much to get through it. Concentration was key however,as it was a somewhat longer article, or at least appeared that way.

Democrat lawmakers and staff are privately saying that they are closing in on a deal with Republicans about the new national budget. Unfortunatly 70 billion dollars could be allocated to the war fund. This was because Republicans in the Congress had promised to block any budget that did not include money for the war. On the other hand, it is significantly less than the 200 billion that President Bush had asked for. However, Democrats are aware of the backlash within their own party and their party base.

This article is about Putin the president of Russia looking for a way to retain power after he is forced to step down as Russian president this year. He has found away to keep power in a way that is not only legal but will increase his power and double his power. There has been ongoing talks for the former Soviet State Belarus and current day Russia to once again be a single country. By joining countries Putin would have a new slate and be about to be president of the new union. Although that may sound good for Putin there are problems with what he is doing. By joining countries it may cause Russia's relations with the west some harm especially if its proven that Russian was using its pipelines of oil to force Belarus to agree to the joining.

New York City police officers have developed a new technique with which to catch potential thieves. They leave valuables lying in plain sight and then arrest anyone who picks them up and walks past a uniformed officer without attempting to return the item. This is pretty blatant entrapment, and violates New York law. Not only that, but they keep doing it even after a judge told them to quit it. Yay police state!

Now their is a memeorial in Lafayette for the soliders who died in our war over seas. Over the time this memorial has been up it has suffered hate love, etc. But the biggest outrage occured when anti bush and anti wars poster showed up on the cross. The creator of the memerial stated that this is a memorial not a protest against the war or president. Those signs were made by other people. But now this mememorial is scene as a protest. I dont think so because from what I see everyday. I see the number or deaths. No mention of down with bush or stop the war.

This article is about California's excessive green house gas limitations on cars. The Bush administration rejected a nationwide standard for emissions control (which is why states like Nevada have emissions laws that aren't nearly as strict as California's). So now, not only do we live in a hippie tree hugging state, but we also have to worry about not being able to drive our cars in the future because they might not pass emissions testing. We can also forget about modifying our cars performance-wise in any way if we want to keep them on the road. I think this is totally balls.

An 83 year old veteran of WWII was recently given “sufficient back-pay” for the amount of money that he would have earned had he not been wrongly imprisoned for 15 months in 1944. Samuel Snow is an 83 year old African American who served in WWII. One fateful day in 1944 a riot amongst prisoners in Fort Lawton, where Snow was on guard, resulting in the death of an Italian POW. Supposedly Snow and 28 other African American soldiers (the army was still segregated at that point) convicted for supposedly hanging the man to die after the riot was over. After his prison sentence was over, he was dishonorably discharged and sent home. Because he was dishonorably discharged, he received none of the benefits that any normal soldier would have under the G.I. Bill of rights. Since he now had a criminal record, and had no other marketable skills, he became a janitor.

He recently found out that his case was revisited by the court due to the efforts of Jack Hamann who dug up his case while searching for a precedent case for his current case similar to this. When Snow heard that his case was overturned and he was to receive due payment for his time spent in prison, he thought it would be a large sum of money suitable for such an injustice, but when he received the check, it was only $725, which is the actual pay he would have been able to earn in those 15 months he spent wrongfully imprisoned. If that number was adjusted for inflation, it should have been at least $7,768.13, not to mention the fact that if he had been able to invest that money at 8% interest, it would now be well over $82,000. After complaints by the other wrongfully imprisoned members who received similar amounts, the army continued to hold its ground saying that it was a fair amount. At 83 and in poor health, Samuel Snow said that he doesn’t think he or the other convicted guards will live to see justice.

I didn’t have any trouble reading this article.

This article talks about the writer strike. It talks about the writers and the film actors, and the people that support it. It also talk about how a lot of different tv shows and movies that has been put on pause. It also talks about different people's ideas about what is going on. Also the last strike that happened in 1988. The main thing is it talks about why the writers are on strike as well.

The article that I read was about immigrantion. Mike Huckabee is a republician canididate running for presidency. He believed that illegal immigrants children should get in state tution for college. However as of yesterday he has changed his mind. He presented a new plan for illegal immigrfants where they would have to register with the government and then have to go home. The people in The US have voted that the illegal immigrants situation is one of the most important problems that the US is having at the moment.

When I was reading I found it easier to understand when I read out loud. I also asked friends about words that I didn't know.

Summary:
One of the two fishermen’s body who was named Benjamin Hannaberg, was found on a Half Moon Bay Beach. He was fishing with a groundskeeper for a San Leandro school on December 4, but was not found until today. But the groundskeeper, James Davis, has still not been found. They ran unto more than 20 feet swells on their way back to the harbor and lost contact with another boat before disappearing.

Reading strategies: Looked up words and read the article a few times.

UK bank data of millions missing
This past year we were notified that Britain has lost track of two disks when they were being sent to a government audit office. These disks contained personal data of approximately 25 million people. That equals to about 7.25 families. The information on the disks included names of parents and children, their addresses, dates of birth, national insurance numbers and banking details. Paul Gray, the Revenue and Customs Chairman, insists that the disks have not gone into the possession of a criminal.

Some reading strategies I used while reading this article was first, reading it more than once. In order to get an insightful comprehension on the article, I read it about three times in order to strengthen my summary of it.

One of America's best organizations is being cheated. The sports organization known as the MLB is in question. It is because Thursday's 409-page report identified 85 names of people that took steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. These people are among the organization's most prolethic players. Some of the players are Barry Bonds who broke the world record for home runs and a man named Roger Clemens who was Seven-time Cy Young Award winner, eighth on the all-time list with 354 victories, an MVP and All-Star himself and once a lock for the Hall of Fame. These people are very important to America as they are among the best players in one of our favorite past times. Currently there is more investigations to support the aligations hopefully it is all wrong and the players are innocent. It is sad that the eras best hitter and pitcher are guilty of doping and cheating.

The reading strategies that i used were rereading, and searching the names of players i wasn't familiar with on the internet.

This article talks about the possibility of UK going completely dependent on a clean energy, which would be great. They already have a wind station set up outside of London, but a Mr. Hutton is encouraging the island to set up 7,000 more turbines. The UK currently uses 98% energy that is NOT reusable, like wind and if they set up these turbines all of the UK's house power would be reusable ad clean. If this is set up by 2020 it would mean reaching the EU's target early. There is a lot of great talk of this, of course, but there are still party poopers saying that the turbines are too visible, dangerous and loud.

I just read this, it is an easy article to understand.

*On nov 10, a huge cyclone called cyclone Guba hit papua new guinea and the persistent rain that accompanied "triggered" a flood on the northern coast of guinea and thousands have been left homeless because of the flooding. so far the official death toll is 150+ and at least 13,000 are homeless. Along with destroying homes the storm severly damaged the water supply system within the islands and swept away over 22K Kilometers worth of crops. The mess after the flood has lead health experts to warn new guineans of potential disease outbreaks including cholera, dysentery, diarrhoea and even malaria as the water continues to bring in more and more mosquitos. Islanders expect storms, but not until december when they are ready to stay in doors and stock food.

3 weeks ago papua new guinea was declared a state of emergeny situation, but even after with the declaration new guineas have yet to recieve relief or supplies.

Divisions deep over abortion ban

There is a new law in Nicaragua that makes abortion illegal, no matter if it is threatening to your health or if you were raped. It includes a story about an 18 year old pregnant girl went to the doctor because she was having pregnancy pains. She had an ultrasound to see if the baby was still alive and the doctor sent her on her way. The doctor did not tell her that her life was at stake and that she needed a surgical intervention, and later on she had a hemorrhage and died. Since the law was passed there has been about 82 pregnancy related deaths. As the law is still in effect there will be nothing more than growing and growing controversy.

The article was not that hard to read/understand so I did not have too many problems. I did read it twice though just to make sure that I had all the facts.

PROTESTS IN 50 CITIES SEND UP SOS ON CLIMATE

The UN Climate Change Conference was held for two weeks ending this Friday in nationwide protests calling attention and action against global warming. The article cited Indonesia, Manila, Taiwan, New Zealand, Berlin, Germany, London, Finland, Athens, Washington and Alaska as the main cities of protest. This was amazing to me. I think it is amazing because so many countries can actually agree upon something.
A London protester said that the Bush administration is the largest obstacle to progress on climate control. Hearing the protester say thiswas a releif to me. If the current American administration was really the largest set back then maybe there is hope in the next year, with a new one, that the progress will start to really kick in.

I read the article twice.

In the article, the unholy trinity, Greg Grandin speaks of governmental terrorism and how governments have tried to keep their terrorism clandestine to the public. Grandin cites three main manifestation that refer to governmental terrorism; Death squads, disappearances and torture. The author explains how the U.S. has had their government-sponsored terrorism in Latin America, Korea, and the Middle East. He explains how government-sponsored terrorism started, spread, and affected many other countries. The author’s goal is to inform the reader of the impact of the U.S.’s government-sponsored terrorism from the mid 1900’s to our present day. He also shows how our present government’s involvements on “the war on terror” in the Middle East are not so different from the past.

3.) This article is about the states that decide to abolish the death penalty in the US and the most recent state that plans to abolish the death penalty is New Jersey. With the death penalty abolished in some states, it makes staying in jail the most severe punishment. The states that have already abolished the death penalty are Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Hawaii. The reason why some states decide to abolish this punishment is because it can lead to the killing of innocent people. Also the death penalty doesn’t stop the crimes that still occur.

This would mean that there would not be any more executions for criminals, making it the 13th state following the trend. This is especially important for the eight men currently on death row. The reason for ending this type of punishment it to cut cost and reduce the chance of killing innocents and hurting other affected

On December 11th, 2007 two bombings occurred in Algiers, the capital of Algeria. The first bomb blew up outside the supreme court building, and the blast pulverized a bus full of university students. The second of the bombings virtually destroyed a UN office in another district in Algiers. It is under the debris of this site that many speculate are dozens of trapped people. However, rescuers were slow to reach the building because of the streets that were clogged with onlookers. Interior Minister of Algeria, Yazid Zerhouni, claims that a suicide bomber is at fault. Due to obvious connections to other recent bombings throughout Algeria nowadays, these particular terrorist acts were linked to al-Qaeda.
