President Bush has made an announcement that the government is now having a “a tough time” as our economic position. He was speaking to the economic club on our situation. He was warning now warning us of the rough road ahead for our economy. He is saying that today we have to be moving fast to make our market stable. Bush stated that this is all happening because it is our natural cycle of our economic system.

3) The Trade Ministry of Israel plans to kick all Asian restaurant workers out of the country by 2009. Asian restaurants have grown a lot in recent years, up to 10% according to the Israeli dining industry. All in all there are about 900 foreign-born (not all of them are from Asia) chefs and kitchen workers are employed in Israel. A ministry official said: "We feel an Israeli can hold a wok as well as a Thai or Chinese person." Because of that protesters and critical voices say that the Israeli government becomes more and more racist. Asians in Israel are well known for taking some of the 'dirty' jobs as the Palestinians, who usually did that, are not longer allowed in Israel are now gone. The government has limited the visas for foreign restaurant workers to 500.

This article is about how the Dalai Lama is calling for an end to violent protests in Tibet, while China is saying that the Dalai "clique" has organized this protest in time for the Olympics in China. Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has directly accused the Dalai Lama himself of "masterminding the protests against Chinese Rule." Although the Dalai Lama advocates peaceful protest, the current state of affairs on the Tibet/China border are anything but peaceful.

For this article I looked up several other sources to get a better background on what was going on in Tibet right now, so I guess metacognition would be a big part of how I read this article.

A woman named You Mi from South Korea came to San Francisco to find work. She found work as a "hostess" and "a person to pour drinks". And when she got into America, she came illegally through Mexico. And the job she realized she was doing wasn't the job she signed up for. She is a "masseuse", a sex-slave. She had no idea until she was working. She was hoping to come to America to find work to pay off her credit card debts, but ended up in a bigger debt because transporting her to America was more money and food and shelter was a big deal. It took her about 5 months to pay off the debt of her delivery, but is still in debt for her credit card.

Re-reading, looking words up, and reading it out loud

3. In the article, a man discovered a huge sand stone underneath his ranch and dug it up in North Dakota. There, was found a mummified dinosaur, specifically an Edmontosaurus named Dakota, 2004. It is not surprisng however to find a dinosaur in North Dakota. A few have been found there already. It is covered in fossilized skin and is one of four mummified dinosaurs discovered in the world. Through it being mummified, it allows us to see a dinosaur as a whole, carcass and everything.

Right now, they are still chizzling away at it and scanning it to examine it more in depth.

Hopefully, to the discoverer, it will be on tour to show to everyone. This will probably be as close to a dinosaur in whole ever.
4. A strategy I sued when reading this article was re-reading it to get a better understanding of it to its fullest!

This article is discussing how they have found a new planet that has traces of methane on it. This planet is orbiting around a star some 63 light years away. This has been a major stepping-stone for scientist in trying to find new life and environments on other planets not just within our universe. They believe that this methane is a major chemical reaction in creating human life yet it is way to hot on the planet for actual humans to live. The number of known planets now orbiting stars other than our own is about 270.Yet most of the planets, scientists know little about other than the planet's mass and orbital properties.

Reading Strategies: To help me understand this article I had to look up what the chemical methane was. From understanding this I then re read the article.

This article reports about the violence and problems in Tibet between Tibetans and the Chinese army. The Dalai Lama asked the world to help and try to convince the Chinese government to start a dialog with the Dalai Lama. The Chinese president told then the British Prime Minister that he would meet the Dalai Lama in May during his visit in London. The reason for the Chinese president to think about a meeting with the Dalai Lama is that the Dalai Lama only wants an autonomy for Tibet and not the total independence. The Chinese government also appreciate that the Dalai Lama tries to stop a protest march from Dharamsala to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The Chinese government also needs to think about changing their strategy for Tibet because the protests are now also in other provinces next to Tibet and if the Chinese government doesn’t start a dialogue then the situation can get worse.

A reading strategy I used to understand everything was that I re-read some of the parts of the text.

This article is discussing how our presidential candidate Barak Obama criticized his preachers racially charged sermons.Though Barak Obama didn't want to deny any connection to him, which could in a way hurt his campaign. which it did by having been attack by his competitors. This lead to a speech by Barak titled "A More Perfect Union" The article basically sums up how he "rebukes" his preacher. While this speech can help him with votes in Pennsylvania election.

This article discusses the new 2008 tax rebate that the government just issued to anyone who pays taxes and makes under $75,000 (that is alot of people!)
This specific tax rebate that they will be writing checks for this summer, is to "boost the economy".
The last time the government issued an "economy" rebate was in 2001, over five years ago. All the money being put into this is to entice Bussiness, service, work, production and hopefully in the long run more money. The total of this entire operation will cost over $146 Billion dollers. Will the bussiness enticed vy this money really replace it?

Reading strategies is used:
i just read through the whole article even when theyre was distracting side commentry, but the main thing i needed to do was look up information about the last tax rebate like this to really see how uncommon this procedure is.

In recent times, there have been many Universities throughout the country that have been conducting controlled experiments in regards to sleep and sleep deprivation. Through these studies, many scientists have shown growing concern for the lack of sleep that Americans get nightly. It is essential that an adult gets 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep a night, while the average for an American adult is at 6.7 hours. They have found that sleep deprivation decreases the amount of leptin in the brain, which controls hunger (those with less sleep [4 hours] were VERY hungry). They have also found that major catastrophic events in recent history like the Exxon oil spill and maybe even Chernobyl were caused by workers having sleep deprivation. One of the people that were only permitted 4 hours of sleep showed great risks at attributing type 2 diabetes after 5 days of only having 4 hours of sleep. ALSO! They think that memory improves with a good night's sleep.

A scientist said that, quite possibly, the most sleep deprived are high schoolers. Adolescents need 9 to 10 hours of sleep, and on average are getting around 6 hours.

The conflicts between the chinese authorities and tibetan protesters has gotten violent since their protests started earlier this year. Chinese officials accused the dalai lama of stirring up violent protests but the dalai lama denied these claims and said he only encouraged peaceful protests. He says he will step down as leader of the tibetan government if things get out of ocntrol. Meanwhile chinese officials claim to not have killed any protestors and were not armed but protestors have photos of bloody corpses beaten by chinese police officers.

This article is about the 2nd Amendment and the right to “keep and bear arms” in the District of Columbia because they wanted to ban handguns. This is causing some controversy as people have a right to weapons as stated from the 2nd Amendment yet “About 80,000 to 100,000 people every year in the United States are either killed or wounded in gun-related homicides or crimes or accidents or suicides… In the District, I guess the number is somewhere around 200 to 300 dead and maybe 1,500 to 2,000 wounded.” The use of rifles and muskets is allowed but handguns would be banned.

The strategy I used to read this article would be to re-read it over and over a few times to fully comprehend the gravity of it and then I reflected upon how people would react on both sides of the argument.

This article talk about how they found a organic molecul in far off in space on a planet. The organic molecul is made out of methane. Therefore stating that there is water on that planet. This mean there could be a chances in which there is life or a planet in which can hold life. But there are a lot of debate going on around this area because a few believe its not possible because half of the planet is burning hot, in which this faces the sun and the other half is cold and this side doesn't face the sun. Therefore some believe its not able to happen and question a lot of the information while others believe in it and want to study more into it.

This article is about the dead body trade industry, the legal and black market one. The legal one consists of donations because buying or selling dead bodies are illegal. There is a high demand because dead bodies have helped surgeons in medical achievement for many years. One man, sentenced to 20 years in jail, made $500,000 from illegally selling 100 bodies. He would give family members an urn of leftover ashes from the bottom of the crematory. Researchers say that this is just the beginning because these types of crimes are so difficult to track, that there are many more body-snatchers out there.

3) Astronomers have found signs of the building blocks of life as we know it on a exoplanet (a planet outside of our solar system). Using the Hubble space telescope they have found signs of methane gas and WATER. These two can combine and form amino acids. The planet is known as HP 189733b in the constellation of Vulpecula. The planet is too hot to be habitable. Signs are fuzzy, so when the James Webb Space Telescope comes around in 2013 we will be able to tell for sure and maybe see more.

This article states how the UN is looking into possible scenarios it could put into place to help create peace in Somalia. The ICU continues to wage war against the TFG despite the help of Etheopian troops. Once scenario calls for UN peacekeeping troops to enter the country to help the peacekeeping efforts. Another calls for peacekeeping troops and Ugandan and Burundi troops in an effort to help stabalize the country after sharing the power equally between the power hungry factions. This war has affected the country severly, and makes it unpredictable where will be safe and where will not be safe, especially in the south near Mogadishu.

During a huge study of it's kind, researchers were tracing the past of people over 300 individuals in Latin America from Mexico to Chile. They discovered that the majority of the people that they analyzed can trace conquistadors about 13 generations back. This is also significant because this supports the historical argument that the conquistadors killed off the native men and created relationships with the native women and the African slaves.

So cutting back on bottled water would make restaurants lose profit, but it helps the envorinment.
