In San Jaun, Puerto Rico 6 men are being charged and if convicted will be sentenced to death. They are currently being prosecuted for the attacks of September 11. The issue with this situation is that capital punishment is illegal in over 120 countries. Also what makes this story pretty heavy is that the Bush Administration is trying to be able to bring these accused back to the United States. If brought back they will probably face death.

Well I just read this article over. I really wanted to make sure that the story was current and not a year ago. Also I really tried to take notes to understand the points stated.

The USA wants to shoot down a satellite that was launched in 2006 but is now out of commission. However, the satellite is as bug as a bus and has toxins that can really harm someone’s body and even kill them. It would also cost the US $60 million dollars to do so. But the pentagon is thinking that it might fall in the hands of another county and they could find out our “secrets”. But they are still thinking about shooting it down.

A high school senior paid two hit men $260 to kill his adoptive parents because he thought they were too strict. The high school senior gave money, three handguns from his adoptive father’s collection, a parent’s ATM card and a PIN number, and the security code for the family’s house. The high school senior asked a school mate asking if he knew anyone who “may have been willing to facilitate a murder-for-hire” and the school mate introduced the high school senior to the two hit men.

This was after the satellite was successfully shot (following after John Carreon's article). The shot caused a bunch of debris to scatter in space and the U.S. says that the debris won't cause as bad damage as the complete satellite would if it went out of its orbit and landed on earth. It is suspected that this action was to test a new anti-satellite weapon for future use and not to save the earth from a "dangerous fuel tank" that can cause hazardous damages to people's health if it falls on earth from space. China wants the U.S. to keep countries updated on their actions because it may affect them and they need to know so that they can make necessary preparations in time. The U.S. actually kept China updated about the shoot down of the satellite within hours of the reported hit, so they did let them know in this situation.

I had to read the article out loud and clarify some definitions of words I wasn't familiar with.

Cuba votes while castro steps down is an article that talks about the voting system in Cuba. The U.S. thinks that their elections were boggus because there was only one party that participated in the election. Through out the article there is an out look on the cuba/ U.S. relationship. At the end it shows the similarity that there is in the Cuban elections and U.S. election

To understand this article I had to read it more than once. I also read aout loud.

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez has said that "It is time to defend the motherland." What he means by that is that it is time for Venezuela to defend the country's own interest. Just a year ago Orinoco Oil Belt was controlled by the imperialism, but now Venezuela has control. Hugo said that it is up to the wealth from the oil that will help Venezuela become greater. North America have been carrying out legal actions to get more of the land. Chavez "will not ever give it ever again to the empire."
With the more made from the oil reserve he plans to put more money into Venezuela interest to try to gain more security.

I read the article once than got a highlighter and read i t again highlighting any words I didn't know and the important parts. Then I looked up the words and from what I highlighted made a summary.

Many members of the U.S. military are immigrants who’ve waited many months, even years to get their citizenship. There have been a large number of complaints due to delays from background checks and name checks. Regulations have become stricter because of 9/11, which continues to the process of getting citizenship. This article also mentions a man named Sgt. Kendell Frederick who had to file 3 times for citizenship. His final attempt was when he had to send in another set of fingerprints because his previous ones were unclear. He later died from a bombing in Iraq before he was given citizenship.

I reread parts of the article that were confusing.

My article is about a demonstration in turkey against a law which the government passed. The law allows women to wear a headscarf in Turkish universities. But the demonstrators think that this is only the first step to a religious country and stop the laicism on which the constitution is based in turkey like in every western country because they see the headscarf as a symbol of political Islam. The government says that because of the headscarf ban many Turkish women can’t go to university because their religion tells them to wear the headscarf. The demonstration took place in Istanbul in front of the mausoleum of Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish republic. The most powerful opponents of the headscarf are the army and the judges.

I had to look up a few words in the dictionary to understand the whole text.

'And the Happiest Place on Earth Is...'

This article discusses theories about why Denmark is the 'happiest place on earth'. The Danish people have been consistently rated as the happiest people in the world, and many are shocked, as the country isn't very powerful, their neighboring countries do better in many ways than they do, and they SPEAK AN UGLY LANGUAGE. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD DANISH? IT'S BAD ON THE EARS.

A research/ survey team came up with a relatively solid explanation about Danish happiness. Their expectations are low. Since their expectations are low, they aren't disappointed if they don't do so well, and if they do well, yay for them. The Danish typically don't want to have loads of riches, but to just feel happy and personally successful. Along with this Danish mindset, their government takes care of them, and there isn't much crime at all.

This was really interesting, as I get caught up a lot in perfect expectations for myself, and if I do less than what I hope for--it nearly ruins my day. It's nice to think about taking on a new perspective that may actually make me happier in the long run. The Danish are quite wise in this way.

1. I read it thoroughly.
2. I love the Danes, and the accompanying video so I read and watched the televised versions.

There have been an eerily large percentage of cancer cases in people who formerly worked at Kezar Stadium. It is extremely scary to see so many cases coming out of the same work area. Kezar Pavillion has been tested for dangerous chemicals, and it has been discovered that there is in fact asbestos present, though the health and safety expert says the building is not to blame. This event has led to a push to inspect all park and rec facilities, which will be dicussed at a meeting sometime next month.

Since July 2006, Fidel Castro transferred his powers to his brother, Raul Castro. Fidel has not been seen in public since. Fidel was the Cuba's LEADER since 1959 and is the longest ruler of a country in the world. Though he will not be president, it is he will remain in the parliament and become elected into the 31-member Council of State. Since resignation, many people in Cuba hope for economic reforms that will help boost the economy of Cuba. Raul also stated that the government wages are not sufficient enough for the basic needs.

This article is about cyber bullying by students but on teachers. It states that 26% of teachers (according to the NSBA) are bullied on line and that many have taken legal action against the students that post fake images and other lies that ridicule the teachers. In some cases this has caused these teachers to loose their jobs. Due to all this bullying, 45 states have passed “cyberstalking laws” and of those 45, 11 prohibit cyberbullying. Part of the reason for these laws was that in 2006 80% of students reported cyberbullying and after a teenage girl in Missouri committed suicide after she was bullied online by an adult. Many people are trying to get stricter laws passed but many lawmakers fear that it will violate everyone’s 1st amendment rights.

3.Because of the fact that former dictator Fidel Castro exists the people in Cuba now hope for a change in their country. Not just the people but also foreign investors hope that new economy reforms will change the way Cuba handled its trade. A study found out that ending the export restrictions could increase farm sales to Cuba by about $300 million a year. But that's not the only thing that could be improved. Cruise lines, hotels, automakers and also construction companies could profit from a possible change on Cuba.

44 percent of Americans switch religious affiliations within a lifetime. Based on a poll taken by 35,000 Americans, this is due to the lack of locality occurring within specific religions, in regards to the class and titles that are commonly connected to them. In other words, people don’t like how their chosen religion is perceived. The report showed that most religions were losing and gaining members in equal proportion. This tells the researcher that these people were leaving one place in turn for another. Something must be triggering this. Yet, the Roman Catholic Church “has experienced the greatest net losses as a result of affiliation changes.” And the group that ended with the largest gain of members was the unaffiliated. A little more than 16% of adults do not belong to organized faith. The unaffiliated is the fourth largest religion group. It is shown that the most common religion has a more significant affect on the country “it is a powerful indicator of where America will end up on politics, culture, family life. If you want to understand America, you have to understand religion in America.”
The rise of the unaffiliated is not that the country is not as religious as it once way. The most popular of all the unaffiliated are not atheists and agnostics, but people who claim that their religion is “nothing in particular”.
The religious diversity in this country can go both ways, it can be dangerous or harmonious.

This article is about a marketing tactic food companies use to appeal to consumers. Today, many companies display images of fruits or describe their product as “(name of fruit)-flavored”. Two of the products mentioned in the article claim to have “strawberry” in their name but the fruit bar contains only 0.5% strawberry and the fruit tea contains only 0.2%. This “practice is legal” but common because flavoring costs are lower than the real thing. Manufacturers “trust consumers to buy their products every day” but this type of marketing is still “misleading and deceptive”.

Scientists around the world are discovering that animals aren't as pea brained as humans once thought they were. From scrub jays, who have the ability to remember the past, plan for the future, and have the capability of being tricksters (hiding their food from other birds after said bird has left the room); to Betsy, the austrian border collie who knows over 300 commands and can fetch toys by photograph. For animals to be capable of "theory of mind" (understanding individuals perspective), to make thoughtful and intelligent commercials proves that its not just a tree with us at the base but a bush with many many leaves, and animals closer to us then we thought.

Currently all around the United States, many internet providers are being clogged up by users who are using their internet connection to download big files (like videos) by using file sharing sites. Companies like Comcast want to delay the rate in which things are uploaded or downloaded by heavy internet users. On the other hand people argue that slowing down those people's connections goes against the free nature of the internet. The UN has recieved word that Iran may have started back up it's atomic weapons project since it's shut down in 2003. Officials like Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's ambassador to the IAEA(International Atomic Energy Agency) have denied these rumors and have stated that the papers brought forth as evidence are forgeries, that they couldn't be legit and have granted access for the continuation of the project. The strange thing is is that these papers have come from several sources, not just one, and as such still believe that the project has indeed gone active. Permanent members of the UN council are still in talks about what to do in Washington DC. Iran still insists that this is dedicated to nothing more than generating electricity.

I really just read the article once and understood a good majority of it. If there was a term I was unfamiliar with I would look it up such as the IAEA, though they give it's title before even mentioning the it as I have.

Dr. James Zogby, addresses the necessity for the U.S. to stop military involvement in the middle East. He states that Iraq and conflict in the Middle East will continue to be an issue, so it is important to take a different approach and mindset. He speak f the mistakes that were made in going into war. At first, during the pre-war debate, the democratic leadership is said to have not wanted to appear “weak on national security” and they supported the war. Also, the white house did not give clear answers for the reasons, costs, consequences and commitment terms for the war. Dr. Zogby says that it can be expected that McCain’s will try to continue the war for military victory. Obama on the other hand will try to stop the war. Zogby says that his approach and mindset make him the best candidate for this issue, and many others.

Wont let me put in Website so i brought article to class

This article is talking about the changes the world is currently going through. Norway is a small country in europe that has built a so called modern "Noah's Arc" incase of an apocolyptic event. The Vualt is built to sustain millions of tons of food along with survivors. The country says that this is only for the security and safety of that country and only their country. Personally i find it creepy that countries are starting to prepare for climate change along with other scenarios because that tells you there is something wrong with our world.

This article was pretty easy to read. I had to look up some words along with reading it more than once.

Researchers in Paris have created a rubber like compound out of mostly vegetable oil and urea, naturally occurring compounds. The amazing thing is if the rubber like compound is severed the two parts can be reattatched just by pressing the two together. This incredibly complicated piece of chemistry was accomplished with naturally occurring elements and represents a huge breakthrough. The material is very similar to rubber and is on the fast track to commercialization.

I read the article and then read it again to summarize.
I also had the windfall of an accompanying video.

This article is about Christian Hanisch, who believes he found a cache of buried Nazi treasure about 100 yards from the Czech border in the state of Saxony. He managed to locate the treasure through his dead father’s notebook! His father was a former Luftwaffe radio operator. The area was scanned with a “sophisticated metal detector,” which read outs that the metal found is gold that is about 20 meters underground.

For this article I read it over and over again to understand what was going on.

In Russia since under the power of Puton Russia has been veery restrained within the media and censorship. Two years ago a Russian journalist was shot and killed because she had the freedom of free speech and was trying to use it. Since this time all free speech has been shrinking in Russia and many people are very scared and ueasy about what will happen next. Along with the shrinking of free speech they "arbitrary" in which people are loosing their right to opinions and NGO's with the threat from autorities.

million pounds of beef were recalled and has become the largest recall of beef in american history. There are a few reasons for why the beef was recalled, but the main reason was because of a video containing footage of one cow being harassed and practically tortured because it couldt walk. As we also know, non walking cows are a sign of mad cow disease, which became quite a phenomenon in the 90's. The funny thing about americas largest recall, is that 90% of it was eaten before even being recalled, but theres nothing to worry about because the USDA says there is very low risk. (even though only about 10% was actually detained?)

reading strategies- i just read trough the text isolating "key terms" in my mind, for transition words like "video footage, 90%, largest, USDA, low risk"

Russia's new president is announced. It's Dmitri Medvedev. Basically people didn't even need to vote because it was pretty much already decided before the voting because Putin supports Medvedev therefore he will be the president. They decided together that after Medvedev is a president, V. Putin would be Prime Minister of Russia, and of course he would get that position because Putin is the only reason that Medvedev is a president. Medvedev is nobody, he'll just be there to make it all official while Putin will still be ruling the country. It just shows how Russian government works - it's all about connections; but hey, it's better to have him than a Communist (Zyuganov) who always finishes 2nd for many many years now (from 1992).

There were no strategies needed. The text was pretty much simple especially because i heard russian news and read russian newspapers, therefore i knew all that information and so it wasn't difficult for me to understand.

In Alba, Texas, a 16 year old girl is charged with murdering her whole family. She shot and stabbed her father, mother, and 8 and 13 year old brothers and then set their house on fire. Authorities found the bodies of her mother and brothers in the ashes of the house, but the father managed to crawl 300 yards to a neighbor’s house where he was able to call for help. Authorities say that she was mad at her parents for not letting her date any of her last 3 prospective 18-20 year old boyfriends. She was found hiding out in a mobile home where one of them lived. All 3 boys are now suspects in the case. The murder shocked the quiet, profoundly Christian town of only about 430 people in eastern Texas where there is so little crime residents rarely even lock their doors.

I got this article a while ago. Before the event actually happened. But it talks about how its a really groundbreaking event because there hasn't been that many americans in North Korea since the Korean War. And in the Korean War, we weren't there to play music. Even though the orchestra is allowed there for 48 hours, its a landmark event because it shows relations between the US and North Korea are good.

I reread the article twice. And thats about it. It wasn't a very dense article

Just outside of Jenner, a small town on the Russian River, a man was shot to death in the parking lot of Blind Beach. The Park Authority discobered the man's body while on patrol this morning. The Sheriff's Department marked off a section of highway 116, next to the beach, to search for evidence. It was originally thought that this shooting may have been connected to the killing of a couple on a Jenner beach in 2004, but it has been ruled out. The authourities reported that seventeen shots were fired in the parking lot and that they were searching for the victims car, a silver 2006 Honda Accord.

I read this article once. Then after I wrote my summary I skimmed back over the article to make sure that I had covered the main points of the article.

The Board of Supervisors just approved this happening where they have a full human body sidewalk plaque where the homeless person had died. Due to high rates of injury, canine cops in the city of Duesseldorf, Germany will now be require to wear footwear when on duty. The blue plastic fiber shoes will protect their paws from debris stuck in the cobblestone that was left behind from street cleaning. The canine shoes will match the standard police uniform and will come in small, medium and large sizes to accomodate german shepards of all sizes.

To read this article I researched the city of Duesseldorf to determine why it is so necessary to protect the dogs paws, and found that in the historic district, pubs and bars are open all night so broken beer bottles line the streets. This researched helped make connections between the need for shoes and the situation in the city.

This article was about whaling in Japan. It talks about how anti-whaling groups are protesting and the conflict they create with the Japanese government. Specifically the article talks about how in this incident protesters threw “containers filled with a mild form of acid made from rotten butter” at whaling ships. The protesters said that it was “non violent chemical warfare”. But, the Japanese government said that it was illegal and that some people complained about pain after being around the fumes and the acidic matter. The article also goes on to talk about more extreme incidents where envelopes of acid were thrown on the ships. Basically, the Japanese say it is for science and the protesters say that it is all wrong, and that actions are necessary against anyone who “hurts anyone in or on the high seas”

I didn’t really use any reading strategies, I just read like I normally do.

In Somalia there has recently been reports of terrorist activity inside the country's southern boarder. America recently has launched a missile attack on southern Somalia against a suspected terrorist with links to Al-Qaeda. There were 3 missles sent into the very most southern end of Somalia near the boarder of Kenya. The US said that it was a deliberate and precise attacking blowing up the house and injuring at least 6 people. (No reports if those were civilians or terrotists.)
"The fact that they've sent the big guns in once again is a clear message that they've not forgotten about Somalia." said a western diplomat in Nairobi.

Whale hunting has been a problem for a while and Japan is still doing it. This article sheds light on the attack of a Japanese whale hunting vessel by Dutch activists of the Sea Shepard. The activists hurled and threw bottles or containers with chemical stinking liquid in it onboard the big whaling ship. The leader of Sea Shepard stated that the chemicals were non-toxic and organic, meant to make it more difficult for the whalers to continue their work. The matter in the bottles was slippery and stinky, and the Dutch activists state that the attack was "non-violent chemical war fare", which I thought was kind of funny. Other activist groups, such as Greenpeace, highly oppose this attack and the ethics of the Sea Shepard crew.
This year Japan will slaughter 1000 whales, for what they claim to be scientific reasons. Yeah, tell the whales that.
I read the article using no particular strategy, except maybe previous knowledge about Japanese whaling.
